Big Apple Barbecue, New York NY

I’ve been talking up this event a lot but it finally happened–Big Apple Barbecue! The weekend was a complete gluttonous whirlwind but I loved every minute of it.
First up was a reception at Blue Smoke (one of the most trusted New York BBQ joints) that screened a few short documentaries staged by the SFA. The films, which paid homage to southern culture and food, included a history of Rip Van Winkle Whiskey (and Julian Van Winkle served up a cocktail with his special reserve) and a Happy Ten Year Anniversary to the Big Apple Barbecue!
Then, the main event. About 20 pitmasters from all over the country trek up to New York to showcase their unique styles/regions–and New Yorkers come in droves. For two days, pits and rigs surround Madison Sq. Park and shut down the surrounding area to satisfy the crowds. The scent of meat and smoke fills the air all weekend along with the live music, booze and a general atmosphere of brotherly love as everyone revels in the same pork appreciation.
